I have been feeling for a while that I needed to start collecting some of the information I have, and continue to collect, for my friends and family and just as a reminder to myself.  For those that know me you know that I have a passion for food.  Not in cooking it per say, but in finding clean healthy alternatives that I can handle and that will hopefully bless my family to live healthier lives.  I have not always had this passion or this drive. In fact as short as just a couple years ago you could walk into my home and we had our shelves and fridge filled with food that I now would not allow my family to eat very often.  We do still occasionally eat certain treats or things that we wouldn’t on a daily basis, but for the most part I am sure of my answers, and my family’s diet tries to reflect that.  We are a religious family, and you will find that this blog will reflect that.  If I pretended to have found these answers on my own it would be a lie.  I was and have been blessed through this whole journey by priesthood blessings and promptings.  So I hope that that will not discourage you from finding your own truths in the things I want to share.

Here is how my story began.

In November 2007 I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.  When I first got diagnosed I asked my doctor about diet. He said that I didn't need to change my diet, but some people choose to.  That was it, no further light or knowledge on the subject.  Upon finding this out I was prescribed various medications to help with the symptoms.   It took me 5 years of being uncomfortable and just plain miserable to come to the point of me saying "I've had enough". I was on immune suppressants which made me get sick more often and be down longer.    I talked to my husband about it, and we began praying and fasting for answers as to what I needed to do.  Medications weren't my answers and I knew in my heart that I just wasn't meant to be sick forever.

So our search began. Documentaries started popping up and articles were being shared like wildfire on the internet, and we both got sucked in!  I was also prompted to study in depth the Word of Wisdom (I can’t tell you how many times I've read and studied it!).  We learned something from each video, blog, article and every time I read D&C 89.  We decided to start little by little; the task of revamping your family’s diet can be very daunting!  First, I decided to start with MSG and ridding it from our home.  Why MSG?  MSG or monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer that can cause liver inflammation, upset stomach, causes weight gain by tricking the brain into thinking its full, and many other things.  It is found in a shocking amount of foods on the market, not just Chinese food.  Here is a link I found that tells you in better detail the dangers of MSG:

As soon as we threw out our ramen noodles, cans of soup, bullion, chips and anything else that we found to have MSG I started feeling better.  I began looking for alternatives to these foods that me and my family could enjoy, and noticed a trend almost immediately.  Most of these foods that didn’t have MSG were also Organic.  We then started to look more into organic food, which also lead to studying GMOs.  We ended up slowly switching our diet to organic foods.  Organic food cannot be GMO, have artificial food coloring, or have the amount of pesticides used on regular crops. These were all big things for me! I started these changes in July or August of 2011.  During this transition I was still using my medication to help maintain my flare ups. In October I stopped taking my medication for Crohn’s.   My body reacted so favorably to this that I have not taken it since December 2011.  I only took in then to help a flare up caused by a pretty intensive surgery.  Needless to say it did nothing, and my body has done well on maintaining itself without the use of medications just by changing my diet. This year will be 3 years that I have been medication free. Along with these changes I also try to eat mostly fruits and vegetables.  We have cut our meat intake in half, cut most dairy from our diet, and I eat mostly gluten free.  I will go more in depth on these on the blog!

Oh, these are topics I could go on and on about!  Just ask my husband.  I will lend you some of my knowledge on these topics on my other pages, but I highly suggest you look into them as well.  Of course like any controversial topic you will find people for and against each of these.  I am not endorsed by anyone.  These findings are based on mine and my family’s experiences and results.

I have followed many blogs and pages based solely on bettering your health purely and naturally, and have found many helpful tips.  Some things seem a little bit over the top to some, but the more I have personally studied and delved into health and preventative tips the more I have seen how our health doesn't matter to our government or big time food companies.  It is up to us to do our research and find these answers ourselves, but I want to share my thoughts and findings as well as some yummy recipes that will hopefully encourage you to want to make healthier choices.  Feel free to share this blog if you feel like doing so. :)
